So you thought the 250 mph Bugatti Veyron was rather special? Well, apparently it’s not special enough for everyone. “There is increasing demand from our customers for a very special car,” said President of Bugatti Automobiles Franz-Josef Paefgen.
The Veyron Fbg has the exclusivity and strong heritage which buyers in the super-luxury market value above virtually everything else. It celebrates a long standing association between Bugatti and Hermes.
Etore Bugatti was a customer of Hermes for many years, one of his purchases from the high-end Paris fashion house being a saddle for his horse. Meanwhile, Hermes got its inspiration to being using zip fasteners on its bags after seeing one on the roof a Detroit-manufactured car in the early 20th century.
Francois Taverne, president of interior and design for Hermes, described the Fbg as “a car that is as much Hermes as Bugatti. [We have] softened its aggressivity to make a more elegant car.”
Changes are extensive and labor-intensive. The grilles are replaced with a design featuring a repeated Hermes “H”; the internal handles are replaced with items that mimic the clasps of Hermes luggage; the seats are completely redesigned, simplified and hand stitched in the style of Etore Bugatti’s personal saddle — and there’s a zipped pocked on the back of each one; the central console is covered with leather; speakers are faced with perforated leather; there is a special wallet housed in a recess in the center console, personalized to the owner.
The piece de resistance is the steering wheel, manufactured from a single piece of aluminum with hand-stitched leather; this alone takes 30 hours to complete. The unique alloy wheels have a design that mimics Hermes stitching, while a special badge identifying the car graces the fuel filler. From the outside, the color-coordinated hood matches the interior leather cover and clearly distinguishes the car from other Bugattis.
Selling for €1.55m (approx. $2.4 million U.S.) plus tax, the Veyron Fbg will enter production later this year. Maximum output, limited by the availability of Hermes craftsmen, will be one car per month.
